The West Bengal government has approved the construction of a Rs 1500 crore bridge over the Muriganga River to connect Kachuberia on the mainland to Lot No. 8 of Sagardwip. The State Public Works Department (PWD) has prepared a detailed project report (DPR) for the bridge, which will involve 12 acres of land being allocated on both sides of the river for the project. A tender for the construction has been issued, with the deadline for submission set for January 5, 2024.
The proposed bridge will span 4.5 kilometers and will be designed as a four-lane structure. Upon completion, it is expected to become the longest bridge in West Bengal, surpassing the Nivedita Bridge. This bridge is expected to serve as a critical infrastructure link, facilitating smoother transportation and reducing travel time for those traveling between the mainland and Sagardwip.
The government has outlined plans to begin construction soon after the tender process is concluded. The foundation stone for the project is scheduled to be laid by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in February 2024. This bridge will connect Kachuberia to Sagardwip, which is a significant location for pilgrims visiting Gangasagar, one of the largest congregations for religious tourism in India. Once completed, the bridge will play a key role in boosting regional transportation, tourism, and local economic activity.
